Premonitions
“Premonitions” is a series of twelve charcoal drawings dealing with public space, doom-scrolling and ethical complicity.
What does it mean to walk down a crowded city street? What does it mean to endlessly flip from one content-heavy but decontextualized image to another on your phone? What does it mean to sit quietly but passively in an audience? What does it mean to be an active observer or to take action in a public place? The allure of multi-faceted urban spaces - cosmopolitanism put in practice - is offset by the reality that public spaces are contested spaces.
I sense the possibility of change, but I'm standing at the edge of a precipice. I've allowed myself to give in to a series of premonitions, omens of violence like the potential energy crackling in the air a moment before lightning strikes. When I draw, I see myself walking through real places and I feel the excitement of transforming and reimagining them, seeing something that doesn't actually exist, but could - and then a sense of dread comes to me.
